Finding a reliable PDF editor on Windows or Mac is usually a matter of choosing between built-in tools and commercial software. On Linux and ChromeOS, the problem is different. Linux gives you plenty of powerful command-line utilities and vector apps, but simple text corrections often scramble document layouts. Chromebooks ship with a built-in app that adds notes and signatures, but Google's help page lists adding text, not changing the words already there.

## Short answer

To mark up a PDF on a Chromebook, use Google's Gallery app. On Linux, use LibreOffice Draw for general vector changes or Xournal++ for stylus notes. When you need to correct existing printed text on either platform, open [Edit PDF](https://trydocsy.com/pdf/edit) in your browser, click the line, retype the words, and download. It runs locally in the browser with no install or upload. We have not tested it on Linux or a Chromebook, and we explain that below.

## Our testing disclosure: what we tested and what we didn't

Before detailing specific tools, we want to be completely honest about how we test. We run our automated browser tests on Windows in Microsoft Edge, plus one core editing test in WebKit on Windows. We have not tested on Linux (such as Ubuntu or Fedora), on a Chromebook, or in Firefox.

Chrome on Linux or ChromeOS is the closest match to what we test, and processing happens locally on your computer. Fonts and shortcuts can still differ, so open your downloaded file to check it before you send it.

## What Google's Gallery app on ChromeOS can and cannot do

Google says PDFs on a Chromebook open automatically in the Gallery app, which handles basic review chores.

*ChromeOS Gallery PDF tools, from Google Chromebook Help, read 2026-10-31*

| Task | Gallery Support? | How to do it, or what to use instead |
|---|---|---|
| Highlight text | Yes | Click the Highlighter icon and drag across text lines |
| Draw and annotate | Yes | Pen tool with customizable thickness and colours |
| Add new text boxes | Yes | Click Text, place the box on the page, and type |
| Sign documents | Yes | Draw signature using touchscreen, trackpad, or mouse |
| Fill form fields | Yes | Click interactive AcroForm text fields and check boxes |
| Change existing text | Not listed | Google lists adding text boxes, not changing the original text; use Edit PDF |
| Reorder or rotate pages | Yes | Drag a page in the left column, or rotate it from the sidebar |

Google's help page covers annotations, signatures and form filling. It also says the signature feature does not provide verification or security. If you need to fix a misspelled surname or an outdated price, the page does not describe a way to do that in Gallery.

## Linux desktop tools: LibreOffice Draw and Inkscape

Linux users frequently turn to LibreOffice Draw when they need to edit a PDF without paying for proprietary software. Draw approaches a PDF by treating every page as a canvas of vector drawing objects.

When you open a PDF in LibreOffice Draw, it breaks paragraphs into individual text boxes. If the original font is installed on your Linux system, you can click inside a box and edit words. However, complex formatting frequently suffers. Multi-column articles, tables with custom cell padding, and embedded non-standard fonts often shift or overlap upon import. Saving the document re-exports a newly generated PDF rather than preserving the original file structure.

Inkscape is another popular open-source option. It imports PDF pages as vector art, which suits a poster or certificate where you want precise control over shapes. It is a drawing program, so it is an awkward fit for contracts, reports and manuals.

> **Xournal++ for handwritten annotations**
>
> If you use a Linux laptop with a touchscreen or stylus, Xournal++ is one of the finest annotation tools available. It lets you write, highlight, and sketch smooth notes over PDFs, but like ChromeOS Gallery, it acts as an overlay and cannot edit the underlying text.

## How to edit existing text in a browser without installs

If you need to change a line of text on a Chromebook or Linux machine without installing packages or risking LibreOffice layout shifts, you can use our in-browser editor.

1. Open [Edit PDF](https://trydocsy.com/pdf/edit) in Chrome or Chromium.
2. Select your document from your local storage. The file loads directly into your browser tab.
3. Click on the text line you want to change. A small edit box appears containing the existing text.
4. Type your correction and press Enter. The tool removes the old characters and draws the new text in place.
5. Click Download to save the corrected file to your Downloads folder.

Because the editor modifies the existing PDF structure rather than converting the entire document into an editable drawing, surrounding pages and vector layouts remain untouched. Nothing is uploaded to external servers, which is important when working on public Wi-Fi or school networks.

You can compare this workflow with [how Preview compares on a Mac](https://trydocsy.com/blog/edit-pdf-on-mac) or see our instructions for [typing answers on a flat PDF form](https://trydocsy.com/blog/how-to-type-on-a-pdf).

## When to convert the document to Word or ODT instead

Direct PDF editing is designed for minor corrections: updating dates, fixing names, adjusting prices, or replacing single sentences. A PDF has no concept of paragraphs that automatically reflow around new text.

If you need to add several paragraphs, reorganize sections, or completely rewrite an agreement, editing the PDF directly will frustrate you. Use [PDF to Word](https://trydocsy.com/convert/pdf-to-word) to extract the text and formatting into a Word or LibreOffice Writer document. Edit the text comfortably in Writer or Google Docs, and export a fresh PDF once your edits are complete.

For documents that originated as physical paper scans, direct text editing cannot modify the picture pixels. Run the document through [PDF OCR](https://trydocsy.com/pdf/ocr) first to build a selectable text layer before attempting any edits.

## Linux terminal tools for automated workflows

Linux shines when you need to manipulate documents from the command line or automate repetitive jobs. Command-line utilities cannot visually edit text, but they excel at structural tasks.

- qpdf: Outstanding for decrypting files, linearizing PDFs for fast web viewing, and inspecting internal object trees.
- pdftk-java: The standard CLI tool for merging multiple files, splitting page ranges, and applying background watermarks.
- pdfimages (poppler-utils): Extracts every raster photograph embedded inside a PDF into individual PNG or JPEG files in seconds.
- pdfgrep: Searches through folders of PDFs for specific keywords using regular expressions without opening a graphical viewer.

Pairing command-line utilities for bulk tasks with an in-browser editor for occasional text fixes gives Linux users a versatile document toolkit without paying commercial software licenses. ## Frequently asked questions

**Q: Can I edit a PDF on a Chromebook for free?**
A: Yes. Google's Gallery app handles freehand drawing, highlights, signatures, and new text boxes. For changing existing body text, you can open Edit PDF in Chrome without installing software or paying a subscription.

**Q: Does LibreOffice Draw ruin PDF formatting?**
A: It can. LibreOffice Draw imports PDFs by converting text blocks into separate graphic boxes. If fonts are missing or layouts use complex multi-column formatting, text often shifts, overlaps, or changes line wrapping.

**Q: Do in-browser PDF tools work offline on ChromeOS and Linux?**
A: Often, yes. TryDocsy is installable as a web app, and a tool you have already used while online keeps working offline. We have not tested this on ChromeOS or Linux.

**Q: Why can't I edit text in Google Gallery on my Chromebook?**
A: Google's help page describes Gallery adding text annotations, drawings and signatures. It does not describe a way to change the original text.

**Q: Can I run Adobe Acrobat on Linux?**
A: Adobe does not offer a native desktop version of Acrobat for Linux. Linux users must use browser-based alternatives, run Windows versions through compatibility layers like Wine, or use open-source utilities like LibreOffice Draw.
