A contract comes back signed, and then somebody spots a wrong date on page two. The obvious fix is to open the PDF and change it. Before you do, stop and think about what the signature means. If two people agreed to a document, quietly altering it afterwards is not a formatting matter. It can leave you with a file that proves nothing, or with something much worse.

## Short answer

You can technically change a signed PDF, but any edit invalidates a digital signature, and the signature panel will show the file was altered. The safe way to fix a signed document is to correct the original, then ask everyone to sign the new version. Changes made after signing should only be made with the agreement of all signers. To sign a file yourself, make all text changes first in [Edit PDF](https://trydocsy.com/pdf/edit), then sign last.

## Two very different things are called a signature

*Digital signature compared with a signature image*

| | Digital signature | Signature image or typed name |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A certificate-based code tied to the file's contents | A picture or text placed on the page |
| How to spot it | A signature panel or a validity badge in Acrobat | Looks like ink, with no panel |
| After an edit | Reported as changed or invalid | No warning of any kind |
| Shows who signed? | Yes, through the certificate | Only what the picture shows |

You will also see the phrase electronic signature. That is the wider term for any way of signing on a screen, including a typed name or a drawn squiggle, while a digital signature is the certificate-based kind.

A digital signature works a bit like a seal over the exact contents of a file. Change one byte and the seal no longer fits, so a PDF reader can report that the document was altered. People in Adobe's community forum put it this way: the signature lets you verify that a document is identical to what was signed, and edits invalidate it.

A picture of a signature has no such protection. Tools such as [Sign PDF](https://trydocsy.com/pdf/sign) place a visible signature on the page, which is fine for many everyday forms, but it can't prove that the document hasn't changed since. This means a file with a visible signature may still be edited with no warning, and that is not the same as being allowed to edit it.

## What happens if you edit a digitally signed PDF

It depends on the software. Acrobat may refuse with a message saying the document has been signed and can't be edited, because many signed files are set to lock when they are signed. Other tools may open the file anyway.

Our own [Edit PDF](https://trydocsy.com/pdf/edit) tool does not check for digital signatures, and it will not warn you that one is present. If you edit a signed file there, you will get a new PDF, and you should assume its signature is no longer valid. That is why we would rather you read this page before starting than find out afterwards.

Some people get around a lock by printing to a new PDF or saving a copy. This does produce a file you can change, but it is a new, unsigned document. It can look identical to the signed one, and the proof of signing has gone. Passing that off as the signed version could be a serious matter, so don't.

## The right way to correct a signed document

1. Tell the other signers what needs to change. If it is a contract, get agreement in writing before you touch the file.
2. Go back to the unsigned original, or remove the signature with the signer's knowledge if your software allows it.
3. Make the correction. For a PDF with no source file, [Edit PDF](https://trydocsy.com/pdf/edit) can change the line while keeping the layout.
4. Have everyone sign the corrected version.
5. Mark the old copy as replaced, and keep it for your records.

For a small correction to a contract, lawyers often prefer a short signed amendment, or initials beside a change on a paper copy, over a replaced document. If real money or legal rights are involved, ask a lawyer, because the rules depend on the document and your country. This article is general information and not legal advice.

## If you are the signer: sign last

The easiest way to avoid this problem is to do everything else first. Fill in the form, fix any typos, add your attachments and get the final page order right. Only then apply the signature.

- Fill in fields first with [Fill PDF Form](https://trydocsy.com/pdf/fill-form).
- Merge, split, compress or rotate the file before signing, because each of these rebuilds it.
- If several people must sign, agree the final text before the first signature goes on.
- Keep the signed copy read-only and send that exact file. Even re-saving it from another app can change the contents.

> **A signature can show as invalid for other reasons**
>
> Users in Adobe's forums have reported invalid signatures on files nobody meant to change, with causes such as cloud sync re-saving a file or a certificate the reader doesn't trust. Before you assume someone tampered with a document, open the signature details and read what the panel actually says.

## Editing a form with a signature image

Everyday forms often carry only a scanned signature. Say you signed your own application and then noticed that the phone number was wrong. It is your document, so you can fix it: click the line in Edit PDF, retype it and download.

Things change when someone else has signed. An offer letter, a bank statement, a marks card or an invoice issued to you is their document, and altering it is not a harmless fix, even if the page looks untouched. Ask the issuer for a corrected copy. We built our tools for correcting your own files, not for changing what another person or organisation has stated.

## Frequently asked questions

**Q: Can you edit a PDF after it has been signed?**
A: You can often open and change the file, but a digital signature will then be reported as invalid or altered. The right approach is to correct the document and have it signed again. Don't change a document someone else signed without their agreement.

**Q: Why does it say this document has been signed and cannot be edited?**
A: Many signing workflows lock a document once it is signed, which protects the signers from later changes. It is a setting chosen at signing, not a fault. Ask the person who sent the file for an unsigned copy if a change is needed.

**Q: How do I remove a signature from a PDF?**
A: Acrobat lets a signer clear their own digital signature when the document allows it. Removing someone else's signature is usually not possible, and for good reason. Ask the signer to clear it, or start again from the unsigned original.

**Q: Will flattening a signed PDF keep the signature valid?**
A: No. Flattening rewrites the file, so a digital signature will no longer verify, even if its picture stays on the page. Flatten a form before signing, never after.

**Q: Does compressing or merging a signed PDF break the signature?**
A: Yes, for a digital signature. Compressing and merging both produce a new file, so the signature won't match the contents. If you must meet a size limit, compress the document first and sign the smaller version.
