# Add Link to PDF

> Add Link to PDF inserts clickable hyperlinks, mailto email shortcuts, and internal page jumps into documents right in your browser. Click a line of text or draw a custom link rectangle on your page. The editor writes valid standard PDF link annotations locally with no file uploads, accounts, or watermarks.

Standard PDF documents often lack active hyperlinks when exported from print layouts or older word processors. Adding clickable destinations turns static citations, references, and table of contents entries into interactive links. Add Link to PDF lets you create web links, email drafts, and page jumps directly in your web browser.

You can click on any recognized text line to anchor a link to that exact phrase, or drag a crosshair across graphics, logos, or callout banners to create custom clickable regions. For text edits or new images alongside your links, read [our walkthrough of PDF editing methods](https://trydocsy.com/blog/how-to-edit-a-pdf). Because all operations run locally in browser memory through WebAssembly and canvas rendering, sensitive documents never travel across external networks.

## How it works

1. **Open your PDF document** — Drag and drop your PDF onto the canvas or select it from your device storage. The file loads in client memory without uploading.
2. **Draw a box or select a text line** — Click Add link in the top bar or press the K key. Click an existing text block to fit the link or drag a box across any page area.
3. **Choose your destination target** — Select Web URL, Email address, or Page jump in the link dialog. Enter your destination address or target page number and save.
4. **Download your linked PDF** — Review the links in the document edits list, click Download in the upper bar, and save your updated PDF with native link annotations.

## When you'd use it

- **Interactive tables of contents** — Turn section titles and chapter outlines in long reports into internal page jumps so readers can navigate directly to specific pages.
- **Resume and portfolio contact links** — Attach clickable LinkedIn profile URLs, personal websites, and mailto email shortcuts to header blocks and social icons on curriculum vitae.
- **Academic citations and bibliography references** — Add external hyperlink targets to footnotes, digital object identifiers, and source bibliography entries in research papers.
- **Product catalogs and sales brochures** — Place clickable call-to-action rectangles over product images and pricing tables that direct prospective customers to online store checkout pages.

## How do PDF link annotations work inside document readers?

In the PDF specification, links are not text formatting styles like bold or italic type. Instead, they are independent interactive overlay structures known as link annotations. A link annotation defines a rectangular coordinate box on a specific page along with an associated action dictionary.

When a viewer opens the PDF, it monitors cursor movement over these coordinates. When an action specifies a URI dictionary, the reader launches the user's default web browser or desktop mail client. When the action specifies a page destination, the viewer immediately jumps the viewport to the designated target page index.

TryDocsy writes standard PDF link annotations into the document structure, so a reader needs no plugin to use them.

## Supported URL schemes and security restrictions

To protect document readers from malicious code execution and phishing vectors, TryDocsy enforces strict protocol validation on every destination link. The editor accepts standard web addresses starting with http or https, as well as mailto email links that pre-populate destination recipients.

The link dialog strictly blocks executable scripts and dangerous pseudo-protocols, including javascript: and data: URIs. If an unsupported scheme is typed, the interface displays an immediate validation message and prevents saving. Destination URLs containing spaces or international Unicode characters are automatically percent-encoded per RFC 3986 to preserve standards compatibility.

## What we tested on synthetic documents

We run automated test suites on synthetic multi-page PDF files using Microsoft Edge 156 on Windows 11. Tests check that web links, email addresses, non-ASCII URLs, and page jumps are written correctly and survive page reordering and deletion.

We re-read exported files with pdf.js and pdf-lib. We have not clicked these links in Adobe Acrobat, Apple Preview or a browser's PDF viewer, so open your exported PDF in your intended reader before you send it.

*Automated checks on synthetic documents, Microsoft Edge 156 on Windows 11, 2026-10-31*

| Target Reader or Engine | Verified Capability | Status |
|---|---|---|
| pdf.js | Web URLs, email links, page jumps | Read back correctly |
| pdf.js | New and existing page jumps after a reorder | Point to the right page |
| pdf.js | Existing web links after a save | Kept |
| Adobe Acrobat, Apple Preview, browser PDF viewers | Clicking a link | Not tested yet |

## Frequently asked questions

**Q: How do I add a clickable link to a PDF without Adobe Acrobat?**
A: Open TryDocsy Add Link to PDF in your web browser, drop your document onto the page, click Add link or press K, and select the text or draw an area. Enter your website address or page jump target, then click Download to get your updated file.

**Q: Can I link to an internal page within the same PDF?**
A: Yes. In the link properties dialog, switch the target kind from Web URL to Page jump and specify the destination page number. Readers will jump directly to that page when clicking the link.

**Q: Does adding links change existing text or fonts in the PDF?**
A: No. Link annotations exist on a separate interaction layer above the page graphics. Creating, editing, or removing a link does not alter font metrics, text streams, or vector drawings in the source document.

**Q: What happens if I reorder or delete pages after creating links?**
A: Page jumps follow their target page when you reorder. If you delete the page a link sits on, or the page a page jump points to, that link is removed.

**Q: Are links preserved if the document already had hyperlinks?**
A: Yes. Existing links are kept, and your new links are added beside them. One exception: if you reorder or delete pages, a link that uses a named destination rather than a page reference may stop working, so test those after saving.
