Free Adobe Acrobat Alternative — TryDocsy
Adobe Acrobat is a paid PDF suite with desktop, mobile and web apps. TryDocsy is a free website whose PDF tools run inside your browser, with no account and no subscription. If you only need to merge, compress, fill, sign or edit a PDF now and then, TryDocsy may be enough. If you work with PDFs all day, Acrobat does more.

Where the work happens: your browser vs Adobe
On Adobe's online compress page, Adobe says your file "will be securely handled by Adobe servers and deleted unless you sign in to save it." The same page notes that with the Acrobat desktop app your files stay on your local device.
TryDocsy's PDF tools load the document into the page and process it with JavaScript libraries (pdf-lib and PDF.js) on your own computer or phone. Reading text from scanned pages is the exception that uses WebAssembly: it runs the Tesseract OCR engine, still inside the browser. Because nothing is uploaded, a slow connection doesn't slow down the processing itself. The trade-off is that very large files depend on your device's memory, and each tool sets its own size cap: 100 MB per file on most PDF tools, 50 MB on the form filler and 20 MB on PDF OCR.
To be complete: TryDocsy runs Google Analytics and ads. The analytics events record things like which tool ran, the file extension and a rough size bucket, never file names or contents.

Adobe details come from adobe.com/acrobat/pricing.html and Adobe's online compress PDF page, checked on 2026-09-17. Prices are in US dollars as shown on that page; Adobe also lists annual prepaid and month-to-month options, and prices can differ by country.
Acrobat pricing as of 2026-09-17
Adobe's pricing page lists three plans. On an annual plan billed monthly, Acrobat Standard is US$14.99/mo, Acrobat Pro is US$19.99/mo and Acrobat Studio is US$24.99/mo. Paid once a year, they are US$179.88, US$239.88 and US$299.88. Month-to-month without a commitment, they are US$24.99, US$29.99 and US$34.99.
For that money Standard covers editing text and images, converting files to PDF, forms and password protection. Pro adds turning scans into searchable PDFs, redaction and comparing versions. Studio adds AI tools. Someone who fills in a form or merges a few statements each month can do those jobs on TryDocsy with /pdf/fill-form and /pdf/merge without a subscription.
What you can do on TryDocsy
Change existing text with /pdf/edit, black out confidential passages with /pdf/redact, and place a drawn or uploaded signature with /pdf/sign. Forms can be filled and then locked with /pdf/flatten.
For page work there are /pdf/split, /pdf/crop and /pdf/delete-pages. /pdf/sanitize removes JavaScript, embedded files and hidden actions, and /pdf/remove-metadata strips document metadata. The full list is on the tools page.
When Adobe Acrobat is the better choice
- Sending documents for signature. Adobe says every Acrobat plan can request e-signatures and track responses. TryDocsy's /pdf/sign only places your own signature image on a page; it doesn't send, track or certify anything. If e-signatures are what you need, our free Adobe Sign alternatives page compares the options.
- AI help with documents. Acrobat Studio offers AI summaries and answers about your PDFs. TryDocsy has no AI features.
- Native apps. Adobe lists Acrobat for Windows, macOS, iOS and Android as well as the web. TryDocsy is a website only.
- Very large or constant workloads. TryDocsy is limited by per-tool file caps and by your device's memory. A paid desktop app is a safer bet for heavy daily use.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is TryDocsy really free?
Yes. There is no paid plan, no trial that runs out and no account. The site is supported by advertising. Each tool does have a per-file size limit, which is 100 MB for most PDF tools.
Do I need an Adobe ID or a TryDocsy account?
Not for TryDocsy: you open a tool and pick a file. On Adobe's online compress page, files are deleted unless you sign in to save them, and Acrobat's paid features come with a subscription.
Where are my files processed?
TryDocsy's PDF tools read and write your file inside the browser tab, so the document isn't uploaded. Adobe's online compress tool says: "Your file will be securely handled by Adobe servers and deleted unless you sign in to save it."
Can TryDocsy edit existing text in a PDF?
Yes. The PDF editor at /pdf/edit changes the existing text in place and can also add text, white-out areas and redactions. Acrobat Standard and Pro also edit text and images in PDFs.
When is Adobe Acrobat the better choice?
When you need what TryDocsy does not offer: sending documents for e-signature and tracking responses, AI summaries and answers, desktop and mobile apps, or one subscription used across a team.
Does TryDocsy work offline?
Partly. TryDocsy's service worker caches pages and files you have already loaded, so a tool you've used before can often open again without a connection. Tools you haven't opened yet need the internet.
