Sign PDF places your signature onto any page of a document, either by drawing on a canvas with a mouse or finger, or by uploading a photo of a pen-on-paper signature where an in-browser model isolates the ink. The result is a visual electronic signature (an image stamped onto the page) rather than a certificate-based digital signature with a cryptographic hash. Drawing and image upload are the two creation methods available; typed-name script generators are intentionally omitted.

Visual signatures are widely used for everyday countersigning on vendor quotes, employment offer letters, consent forms, and informal contracts returned by email. If your transaction legally requires a cryptographic audit trail or a government-issued digital signature certificate, check the recipient's criteria before relying on an image stamp. All rendering and image extraction run locally on your device with zero server uploads.

How it works

1. Upload PDF
Select a PDF up to 100 MB. A document that requires a password to open is stopped with an alert prompting you to unlock it first using the PDF Unlock tool.
2. Draw or upload your signature
Choose Draw Signature to sign on a canvas using your mouse or touchscreen (with four ink colors and three stroke widths), or choose Upload Image to import a photo of your handwritten signature with automatic background removal.
3. Place it on the page
Click anywhere on a page to position the signature, drag it to adjust alignment, or drag corner handles to scale. Each page maintains its own placement unless you activate Apply to all pages.
4. Apply and download
Click Apply & Download. The output file preserves your original filename with -signed added before the .pdf extension.

Is this a legal digital signature or an electronic image?

When you apply your signature, the tool converts your drawn vector paths or uploaded photo into a transparent PNG image and stamps it into the target page stream. It does not append a PKI digital certificate, compute a document checksum, or seal the document with tamper-detection metadata. In Adobe Acrobat, the signature panel will not display a verified certificate because this is an electronic signature (SES), not a cryptographic digital signature.

Under frameworks such as the US ESIGN Act and the EU eIDAS regulation, simple electronic signatures are generally recognised for commercial agreements, sales quotes, and internal approvals when parties agree to conduct business electronically.

In India, the Information Technology Act 2000 recognises electronic signatures created through Digital Signature Certificates (DSC) or Aadhaar-based eSign through licensed Certifying Authorities (cca.gov.in, checked 2026-10-29). An uploaded or drawn image stamp is not one of those statutory tiers. Indian counterparties often accept signed copies by mutual agreement for routine correspondence, but statutory filings, government tenders, and conveyancing deeds require accredited digital signatures. How does automatic background removal work for signature photos?

Draw mode provides a blank transparent canvas with four ink colors (black, blue, red, green) and three pen thicknesses. It records pointer coordinates directly into image memory. Upload mode accepts photos of signatures on white paper and runs a client-side neural model to remove shadows and paper grain, isolating the dark ink lines.

If an uploaded photo has uneven lighting or low contrast that prevents clean background removal, the tool displays an alert and falls back to placing your cropped photo as an opaque image. For best results, photograph pen ink on unlined white paper under even lighting.

Can you place signatures across multiple pages?

By default, each page maintains an independent placement. You can sign page 1 on the bottom right and page 5 on the bottom left. If a legal contract requires initialing every single sheet, turning on Apply to all pages copies your active placement coordinates across all pages in the file.

Frequently asked questions

Is this signature legally binding on contracts?

This tool generates a visual electronic signature (SES), which is accepted for most everyday business agreements. For court filings or deeds requiring certificate-based validation (QES), use specialized digital signature software.

Can I type my name to create a signature?

No. The tool supports only drawing with your mouse, stylus, or finger, or uploading a photograph of your real handwritten signature.

What happens if background removal on my photo fails?

If the automatic model cannot cleanly separate ink from paper background, the tool displays an alert and uses your original photo as-is, allowing you to position and apply it normally.

Can I place the same signature on every page automatically?

Yes. Place your signature on at least one page, then toggle the Apply to all pages option to mirror that exact size and coordinate position across the entire document.

Does signing a PDF alter existing text formatting?

No. The signature is added as an image overlay on the page stream. Underlying text layers remain searchable and selectable.

Can I sign a password-protected PDF?

No. A password-protected document cannot be opened for signature placement. Unlock the file first using /pdf/unlock, then upload the unlocked copy here.
