How it works

2. Select sheets and page orientation

How does the engine handle wide sheets and repeating headers?
A common defect when printing wide spreadsheets is horizontal clipping: extensive tables split haphazardly across arbitrary boundaries, separating row titles from numerical figures.
Our engine measures text metrics using embedded fonts and calculates legible column boundaries. When a sheet contains more columns than fit across a single page, it splits columns into clean blocks across continuation pages, repeating the header row on every page break.
Formula calculations, date formatting, and omissions
Formulas display their latest saved calculated numeric value rather than raw formula text. Dates are standardized into clear ISO calendar format (YYYY-MM-DD) to prevent confusion between month-first and day-first readers.
To maintain lightweight vector rendering, certain decorative elements are omitted: custom cell background fills, conditional formatting rules, embedded chart graphics, and external images are left out. Link text is preserved as plain text without clickable web actions.
Measured benchmark results: mock spreadsheet test
In our test run, we converted a 2-sheet mock workbook (sample-spreadsheet.xlsx, 18,365 bytes) containing department budgets and regional infrastructure nodes. The converter generated a 4,352-byte vector PDF document (output-excel-to-pdf.pdf) across 2 pages.
Inspecting the resulting PDF with pdf.js confirmed that 333 text characters were extracted cleanly, with formula cell B6 displaying its calculated total (97000) rather than a blank value. All sample files and test results are documented in our committed benchmarks.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert individual sheets instead of the whole workbook?
Yes. Once your workbook loads, the converter displays a checklist of all contained worksheets. You can deselect individual tabs to exclude them from the generated PDF.
Do Excel formulas display values or formula text?
Formulas display their latest cached calculation results. If a workbook was saved without precalculated results, the formula text itself is shown.
How does the tool handle very wide tables with dozens of columns?
For wide tables, select landscape orientation. If columns still exceed printable margins, the engine splits columns across numbered horizontal pages while repeating header rows.
Are embedded charts and pictures included in the PDF?
No. The engine is a structured tabular data renderer. Embedded images, chart graphics, cell fills, and conditional formatting rules are omitted to ensure crisp vector text.
What is the maximum workbook size accepted?
You can convert workbooks up to 20 MB. Since conversion executes within browser memory, processing depends only on your device's available RAM.
Does the converted PDF support non-English scripts?
Yes. The rendering pipeline embeds unicode glyphs for Latin, Western European, Cyrillic, Greek, and Devanagari scripts, ensuring accurate characters for international ledgers.
