What is Remove Background?
Remove Background uses the IS-Net (isnet_quint8) neural network to detect the primary subject in a photo and separate it from surrounding scenery. It accurately detects silhouettes across people, products, animals, and complex graphics. Because the model executes locally inside your web browser via WebAssembly, your raw pictures never travel across the internet.
Once the background is erased, you can export a clean transparent PNG, pick a solid studio backdrop, or choose multi-directional gradient fills. IS-Net segments imagery by identifying edge contrast boundaries. Photos where the subject clearly stands out against the background (such as a person in dark clothing against a light wall, or a product on a plain backdrop) produce the cleanest silhouettes with minimal edge fringe.
The 2048 px Resolution Cap
Images exceeding 2048 px on their longest side are automatically downscaled to 2048 px before inference to prevent web browser memory crashes. If you have a larger 24 MP or 48 MP photo, crop tightly around your subject with Crop Image or scale down with Resize Image before removing the background.
Fast vs Best Quality Selector

Why does the first background removal take a few seconds to start?
The deep-learning model is approximately 40 to 50 MB. Your browser downloads and caches it in local storage on first use. After that initial download, background removal starts locally and runs even if you are offline.
Can I replace the transparent background with a solid color or gradient?
Yes. After the background is removed, you can select Transparent (PNG), Solid Color (any custom hex code or 12 preset swatches), or Gradient (6 presets with 4 directional angles).
