Unlock PDF removes PDF-level security from a file you already have access to — either the open password that stops a PDF from being viewed at all, or the separate set of owner restrictions that block printing, editing, copying, adding annotations, or filling in form fields even when no password is required to open the file. It re-saves the document without any encryption dictionary attached, so whichever protections applied before are gone from the downloaded copy.

It's important to be clear about what this tool needs from you: if the PDF requires a password to open, you must already know that password and type it in — the tool checks it against the file and fails with an error if it's wrong. This is not a password-cracking or password-recovery tool; it cannot guess, brute-force, or bypass a password you don't know. If your PDF only has restrictions and no open password, leave the password field blank and it unlocks without one. For an e-Aadhaar PDF specifically, whose password follows a known name-and-birth-year format, use /pdf/aadhaar-unlock instead — a separate tool built for that one case.

How it works

  1. 1. Drop a PDF here

    Upload a locked or restricted PDF up to 100 MB. Anything that isn't recognized as a PDF is rejected immediately with “Please select a PDF file.”

  2. 2. Enter the password, or leave it blank

    If the PDF requires a password to open, type it into the Password field. If it only has restrictions and opens without a password, leave the field empty.

  3. 3. Press Unlock PDF

    The tool shows a short progress sequence — Analyzing PDF security, Verifying credentials, Decrypting content, Removing restrictions, Finalizing document — while it processes the file in your browser.

  4. 4. Download the unlocked file

    Once processing finishes, press “Download Unlocked PDF.” The saved file keeps the original name with “-unlocked” added before .pdf.

When you'd use it

  • A password you know but are tired of re-entering

    A bank statement, payslip, or company report that's password-protected the same way every month — unlock it once with the known password so you can browse or archive it without retyping the password each time.

  • A restricted PDF blocking copy-paste

    A client or vendor sends a PDF with no open password but copying is disabled. Leave the password field blank and unlock it so you can quote or reuse the text.

  • A locked printing restriction on a certificate or ticket

    Some issued documents block printing even without requiring a password to view them. Removing that restriction here lets you print normally from any PDF reader.

  • Prepping an encrypted file for another tool

    Some PDF tools — merging, editing, organizing pages — work best on a file with no security layer at all. Unlock a PDF you own here first, then feed the result into /pdf/merge or /pdf/organize.

You need the password — this doesn't guess it for you

If a PDF requires a password just to open it, the tool attempts to load the file using the exact password you type in. Enter the correct one and it decrypts and re-saves the file without it; enter the wrong one and you get “Incorrect password. Please check and try again.” There is no attempt to guess, brute-force, or otherwise recover a password you don't know — if you've genuinely lost or never had the password, this tool cannot get you into the file.

That's a different situation from a restriction-only PDF, which opens fine for viewing but has printing, editing, copying, or similar actions disabled by its owner. For those, leaving the password field blank is intentional and correct — there's no password to provide, only restrictions to strip.

What gets removed

A successful unlock removes six categories of restriction in one pass: the open password itself (when you supplied the correct one), plus printing, editing, copying, annotation, and form-filling restrictions that the file's owner had set. The output is saved with no encryption dictionary at all, so none of those protections carry over to the downloaded copy — treat the unlocked file accordingly if the original restrictions mattered for a reason.

Removing the security layer doesn't touch the document's actual content: text, images, layout, and page count are identical before and after. Only the protection wrapper around the file changes.

A different tool for e-Aadhaar PDFs

India's e-Aadhaar PDF uses a password built from a known, documented format — typically the first letters of your name combined with your birth year. Because that format is predictable rather than a password you're simply asked to already know, /pdf/aadhaar-unlock is built specifically to compute it from your details rather than requiring you to type a password you may not realize you already “have.” Use that tool for e-Aadhaar files instead of guessing at this one.

Can this tool crack or guess a PDF password I don't know?

No. It only removes protection from a PDF using a password you already know and provide, or from a restriction-only PDF with no open password. It cannot recover, guess, or brute-force an unknown password.
