Flatten PDF turns a fillable form into an ordinary document. The values sitting in its text boxes, checkboxes, radio buttons, dropdowns and signature fields are drawn into the page itself, and the interactive fields are then removed, so the finished file shows the same answers but offers nobody a cursor to change them. Counting happens the moment you choose the file: the panel reports something like “14 interactive form fields found”, and a document with none says so instead of pretending there is work to do.

This is the right last step before a completed form leaves your hands — emailed to an office, uploaded to a portal, or filed away. It is not encryption and not a password: anyone can still open, print and copy the result, and someone determined can still paint over it with an editor. What flattening buys is that the answers stop being editable data in the file, so they cannot be altered by accident, reset by a viewer, or silently re-typed in a form field.

How it works

  1. 1. Choose the filled form

    Drop a single .pdf onto “Drop a PDF here”; the label underneath asks for a filled form PDF, and the cap is 100 MB. The page count appears beside the file name, with a Start Over button to swap files.

  2. 2. Read the field count

    The panel underneath reports how many interactive fields the document has. When there are none it explains that the PDF is already static, and the action button greys out with the label “Nothing to flatten”.

  3. 3. Press the flatten button

    The button names the job, for example “Flatten 14 fields”. Each field's appearance is regenerated first, so what gets baked in is the value as it stands now, not whatever a viewer last cached.

  4. 4. Download the static copy

    A green confirmation reports how many fields were flattened, then “Download Flattened PDF” saves the result with -flattened added to the original file name. The source file on your disk is untouched.

When you'd use it

  • Sending a completed application form

    Application and claim forms are usually circulated as fillable PDFs. Flattening before you send yours means the office receives fixed answers rather than a form that could be edited after it left you.

  • Printing a form that prints blank

    Some viewers and printer drivers print an interactive form without its field values, which is why a filled form sometimes comes out empty. Once the values are part of the page, every printer sees them.

  • Archiving a record that must not drift

    For a file you keep as evidence — a submitted declaration, a signed undertaking — static content is easier to trust than a form whose values still live in editable fields.

  • Preparing a form for another tool

    Page-level operations such as splitting or merging build new documents and leave the form definition behind, which empties the fields. Flatten first and the answers survive whatever you do to the pages afterwards.

What flattening changes inside the file

A fillable PDF keeps two things: the page you see, and a form definition listing each field, its type and its current value. Flattening draws each field's appearance into the page content and then deletes the field, so only the first of those two remains. Nothing is rasterised — the baked-in text is still text, and the rest of the page is exactly as it was.

Only AcroForm fields are affected. Content that was never a form field — a signature image stamped onto the page, body text, tables, scanned artwork — is not touched, and neither are annotations that are not form widgets. If a viewer showed you a comment bubble before flattening, it will still be there afterwards.

The rebuilt file is saved fresh, so a certificate-based digital signature applied earlier will no longer validate: signing covers the exact bytes of the document that was signed. Flatten first and sign afterwards, never the other way round.

When there is nothing to flatten

Plenty of documents people call “forms” have no interactive fields at all: a scanned sheet with printed boxes, or a form whose answers were typed on top with an editor. The tool counts zero and says the PDF is already static. That is not an error, and re-uploading will not change the answer.

If you wanted fillable behaviour in the first place, /pdf/fill-form fills real AcroForm fields, and /pdf/edit places text anywhere on a page for documents that have no fields to fill. Either way, come back here when the answers are final.

A password-protected PDF cannot be processed: loading stops with a message sending you to the PDF Unlock tool. Unlock it there, flatten the unlocked copy, and protect it again with /pdf/protect if it still needs a password.

Flattening is not redaction, and not a lock

It is worth saying plainly, because the words sound similar. Flattening freezes answers in place; it does not hide them and does not stop the file being opened. Anyone can still select and copy the baked-in text, and an editor can still draw over the page.

To remove information rather than freeze it, use /pdf/redact, which takes the content out. To stop the file being opened at all, add a password with /pdf/protect. Flattening sits alongside those, as the step that makes the answers part of the document.

One practical note on size: the saved file can come out slightly larger or smaller than the original, because the form definition goes away while the drawn appearances arrive. It is not a compression step — /pdf/compress is.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly counts as a form field here?

An interactive AcroForm field: a text box, checkbox, radio group, dropdown, list box or signature field. The count shown after upload is the number of those fields in the document.

Can a flattened form be edited back into a form?

Not by re-filling it, because the fields no longer exist. The visible values are page content now, so changing them means editing the page with a PDF editor rather than typing in a field.

Does flattening make my PDF secure?

No. It fixes the answers in place but leaves the document open to anyone: no password, no encryption, and the text stays selectable. Use /pdf/protect for access control and /pdf/redact to remove sensitive content.

Why does the button say Nothing to flatten?

Because the document has no interactive fields — a scan, an exported document, or a form someone already flattened. It is already static, so there is nothing for this tool to do.

Will my checkbox ticks and dropdown choices survive?

Yes. Appearances are regenerated before flattening, so the current state of every checkbox, radio button and dropdown is drawn into the page exactly as it reads on screen.

Should I flatten before or after signing?

Before. Re-saving the document invalidates a certificate-based digital signature, so flatten the answers first and apply the signature to the flattened file.

Does the file get bigger after flattening?

It can move either way by a small amount: the form definition is removed while the drawn field appearances are added. Flattening is not a way to reduce file size.
