Your file is safe

It is processed inside this browser tab and never uploaded, and it is gone when you close the page.

Good to know

  • Need to fill an existing form rather than create fields? Use PDF Form Filler instead.
  • Detection provides a quick initial draft, but complex forms should be verified and adjusted by hand.
  • Exported files use standard AcroForm fields. Open the download in the reader your recipients use before you send it.

Mobile device notice

Placing and sizing form fields requires pixel precision best suited for desktop or tablet screens. On mobile phones, you can tap to add fields, inspect and edit properties in the panel below, and switch to Preview mode to test input typing.

Last updated

Many documents arrive as flat scans, exported Word files, or static layout sheets without interactive form fields. Recipients end up printing them, filling answers by hand, and scanning them back. Make PDF Fillable solves this by letting you add interactive form widgets directly onto any existing PDF document.

You can place fields manually anywhere on the page or use automatic detection to locate candidate blanks from visible underlines and boxes. Because processing runs in client memory with WebAssembly and native web APIs, sensitive applications and tax forms stay on your device. To revise the text first, see editing a PDF before you add fields.

How it works

  1. 1. Upload your PDF

Drag and drop your PDF file or click to select it from your device. The document loads locally in your browser memory.

  2. 2. Choose or detect fields

Click Auto-detect fields to convert detected lines and labels into a draft, or pick a field type from the top palette to place fields by hand.

  3. 3. Adjust field position and properties

Drag fields to reposition and pull the bottom-right handle to resize. Use the properties panel to assign unique field names, set required flags, or list dropdown options.

  4. 4. Test in Preview mode and export

Switch to Preview Mode to test typing and tab sequence. When satisfied, click Download Fillable PDF to save your interactive AcroForm.

When you'd use it

  • Application and intake forms

Turn scanned paper applications, client intake questionnaires, and registration packets into clean fillable forms that recipients can complete on their computers.

  • Employment contracts and agreements

Add text fields, date fields, and signature boxes to vendor agreements, work orders, and human resources onboarding packets.

  • Government and tax paperwork

Prepare flat declarations and municipal filings so applicants can type answers neatly rather than writing by hand in cramped printed boxes.

  • Surveys and evaluation sheets

Add checkboxes, radio choices, and dropdown selectors to feedback forms, inspection checklists, and course evaluation rubrics.

Fillable versus flattened PDFs: what is the difference?

A fillable PDF preserves interactive form dictionaries known as AcroForms. When a user opens a fillable file in a reader like Chrome, Edge, or Preview, form fields remain active inputs. The user can type text, select items from dropdowns, or check boxes, and then save their typed responses into the document. If you are drafting your template in Microsoft Word first, see our step-by-step instructions on how to make a Word document fillable. If you need to fill an existing form rather than create fields, visit PDF Form Filler.

A flattened PDF, by contrast, permanently bakes typed text and tick marks directly into the visual vector streams of the page. Once flattened, form fields disappear completely and answers become permanent page content. If you have finished collecting responses and want to prevent anyone from modifying the submitted values, use Flatten PDF.

When to use automatic detection versus hand placement

Automatic field detection examines text coordinates and geometric drawing paths to locate common form structures like name blanks, date prompts, and checkbox squares. Detection works best on high-contrast digital documents containing clear horizontal underline rules or rectangular input boxes with adjacent labels.

Detection can miss subtle fields or misplace boundaries on complex multicolumn layouts, artistic graphic designs, or faint scans. In those situations, hand placement gives you exact control. You can place fields precisely, set custom boundaries, establish explicit tab sequences, and configure option choices for dropdowns and radio groups.

What we have tested the exported forms in

We export a test form with all seven field kinds and read it back automatically. We have not yet tested exported forms in Adobe Acrobat or Apple Preview, so open your download in the reader your recipients use before you send it out.

Supported capabilities and current limitations

This tool focuses on producing compliant AcroForm widgets: single-line text inputs, multiline paragraphs, dates, checkboxes, single-select radio button groups, dropdown choice lists, and electronic signature boxes. If you need to lock a signed or completed file later, use Protect PDF.

Certain advanced enterprise capabilities fall outside the scope of this browser tool. It does not support JavaScript execution actions, automated mathematical calculation formulas (such as summing table columns), XML Forms Architecture (XFA), or cryptographic public-key infrastructure (PKI) digital certificates. Signature fields provide an electronic signing target rather than a cryptographic certificate seal.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a PDF fillable without Adobe Acrobat?

Upload your document to TryDocsy Make PDF Fillable. Place form fields by hand or use auto-detection, adjust field names and options in the inspector, then click Download Fillable PDF. Your interactive form is generated in your browser without Adobe Acrobat or paid software subscriptions.

Can I add dropdown menus and radio button groups?

Yes. Select Dropdown or Radio Group from the top palette to place the control. Open the properties panel to add, edit, or remove option choices and specify default selections.

What happens if my PDF already contains form fields?

The tool detects existing AcroForm fields automatically and displays them on your pages. You can reposition them, adjust their properties, delete unneeded fields, and place new fields alongside them.

How does tab order work in the exported form?

Fields default to natural reading order from top to bottom and left to right across each page. You can customize the sequence in the Tab Order panel by moving fields up or down, or click Reading order to restore the default sequence.

Does creating a fillable PDF upload my document to a server?

No. Document parsing, field positioning, and PDF generation run entirely in your web browser using WebAssembly. Your files never leave your device.

Can I create calculation fields or automated totals?

No. Mathematical formulas and JavaScript actions are not supported. The tool produces standard text, choice, and toggle fields.
