WhatsApp PDF Size Limit, and How to Send Several PDFs as One File
Published October 28, 2026 · By the TryDocsy team
You have a mark sheet, an ID card scan, a few photos and maybe a slide deck, and someone on WhatsApp wants “one file, please”. Two questions come up every time: how big a file can WhatsApp take, and can WhatsApp join the files for you? This guide answers both from WhatsApp's own pages, then shows how to build the single PDF on a phone without installing an app.
Short answer
WhatsApp's messaging page says the maximum file size for documents is 2 GB, so the size limit is rarely the problem. WhatsApp has no merge feature and can't send a folder, so you combine the files first: convert slides and photos to PDF, join everything with Merge PDF, then attach the result as a Document. Shrink it with Compress PDF only if the person receiving it has to upload it somewhere with a smaller limit.
What is the WhatsApp document size limit?
2 GB per document. WhatsApp's own messaging page, in its answer to “How do I send large files?”, says you can send large files without compression for free, and that “for documents, the maximum file size allowed is 2 GB.” WhatsApp announced the change on its blog on 5 May 2022, calling it an increase from the previous limit of 100 MB.
That is why older guides disagree. Articles written before mid-2022 say 100 MB, and some PDF sites still quote 16 MB, a figure that appears nowhere on WhatsApp's current messaging page. Neither number is the document limit today. If a guide tells you to compress a 5 MB PDF “so WhatsApp will accept it”, it is out of date.
| Where the file is sent | Document limit | Source |
|---|---|---|
| WhatsApp app, file sent as a Document | 2 GB | whatsapp.com/messaging |
| Before May 2022 | 100 MB | WhatsApp blog, 5 May 2022 |
| WhatsApp Business Platform (Cloud API), PDF | 100 MB | Meta developer docs, supported media types |
| WhatsApp Business Platform (Cloud API), JPEG or PNG image | 5 MB | Meta developer docs, supported media types |
The last two rows only matter if a business sends you files through an automated WhatsApp account, such as a bank statement bot or an order-update number. Those systems run on Meta's Cloud API, where the documented PDF limit is 100 MB. You can't change that limit; the business has to.
Can WhatsApp merge PDFs or send a folder?
No to both. WhatsApp sends files one at a time, each as its own message bubble. You can select several documents in one go and they arrive together, but they stay separate files. There is no option to combine them, and there is no way to attach a folder.
Sending them separately is fine for a friend. It is a problem when the person on the other end has to forward or upload them: a college office that wants “all documents in one PDF”, a recruiter who will attach your papers to an application, or a relative filling in a government form for you. They then have to save six files, put them in order and merge them themselves, usually on their own phone.
Zipping a folder is the other common workaround. WhatsApp will send a .zip as a document, but the recipient can't preview it in the chat, and opening one on a phone often needs a file manager app. If the goal is something the other person can read immediately, one PDF works better.
How to send several PDFs as one file on WhatsApp
Everything below works in Chrome on Android or Safari on iPhone. The files are processed inside the browser tab and are not uploaded to a server, which matters when the pile includes an Aadhaar card or a bank statement.
- Turn anything that isn't a PDF into one. Photos and scans go through Image to PDF. A .pptx slide deck goes through PowerPoint to PDF. An old .ppt file has to be saved as .pptx first in PowerPoint, Google Slides or LibreOffice, because the binary .ppt format can't be read in a browser.
- Unlock anything with a password. Merge PDF skips password-protected files and tells you which ones it skipped. e-Aadhaar PDFs are always locked; Remove e-Aadhaar PDF Password opens one with the usual name-and-birth-year password.
- Open Merge PDF and add the files. Each time you pick files they are added to the end of the list, so on a phone the easiest way to control the order is to add them one at a time, first page first. With a mouse you can also drag the list into order.
- Tap Merge, then Download. The combined file lands in your Downloads folder (Android) or the Files app (iPhone).
- In WhatsApp, open the chat. On Android tap the paperclip, then Document; on iPhone tap +, then Document. Pick the merged PDF and send.
When should you shrink the PDF anyway?
Not for WhatsApp's sake. Shrink it when the file's next stop has a smaller limit, or when the people involved are on slow or capped mobile data. Typical cases:
- The recipient will upload it to a portal. Exam, job and college portals in India often cap a PDF in kilobytes rather than megabytes, so a 12 MB merged PDF that WhatsApp happily sent will bounce there.
- It is going to a large group. Every member downloads their own copy, and a 40 MB file is a lot of mobile data to ask of 200 people.
- It's mostly phone photos. A single phone photo can be several megabytes, so ten of them turned into a PDF can produce a file far larger than the paperwork needs.
Compress PDF takes a target size, such as 500 KB or 2 MB, and keeps the largest version it can find at or under that target. Be aware of how it gets there: it re-renders each page as an image, so text in the compressed file is no longer selectable or searchable. For scans and photos that makes no difference. For a typed document where the recipient might need to copy a reference number, send the uncompressed version or check the target with them first.
If the file is too big because of a few unnecessary pages, removing them beats compressing everything. Our guide to PDFs that are too large to upload measures each fix on a real five-page application file, in the order that loses the least quality.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my PDF fail to send on WhatsApp if the limit is 2 GB?
Usually it's something other than size: a weak connection that times out on a large upload, too little free storage on the phone, or an old WhatsApp version. Try Wi-Fi, free some space, and update the app. If a business account rejected it, that account may be on the Cloud API, where PDFs are capped at 100 MB.
Can I combine a PDF and a PowerPoint into one file for WhatsApp?
Yes, but not inside WhatsApp. Convert the .pptx with PowerPoint to PDF, then join both PDFs with Merge PDF and send the result as a Document.
Does sending a PDF on WhatsApp reduce its quality?
Not when you attach it as a Document. WhatsApp's messaging page says large files can be sent without compression. Photos and videos sent from the gallery are a different path and can be compressed.
Can I merge PDFs that someone sent me on WhatsApp?
Yes. Save each one from the chat (they go to your Downloads or Files app), then add them to Merge PDF in the order you want. Locked files, such as e-Aadhaar, need their password removed first.
Is there a page limit for PDFs on WhatsApp?
WhatsApp's pages state a size limit, not a page count. A very long PDF is still one file as long as it stays under 2 GB, though the recipient's phone may be slow to open it.
