Where 20KB is an exam's minimum, don't target exactly 20KB: the result is always at or below its target, so it can fail that minimum. Target a few KB above the minimum instead, for example with the 50KB page, and if a small photo still comes out under it, raise it with Increase Image Size in KB.

This page opens the TryDocsy image compressor with its target already filled in as 20KB, so a photo or scanned signature comes out no larger than 20,480 bytes. That is the tightest limit most Indian recruitment forms apply: on the SSC CGL form, for example, 20KB is the ceiling for the signature (10–20KB) and the floor for the photograph (20–50KB).
Everything runs in the browser tab through the Canvas API, so the picture never reaches a server. The honest limit is physics rather than software: 20KB holds a small, plain image well and a large, busy one badly. The steps and sections below explain how to give the compressor an image it can squeeze to 20KB without turning a face into blocks.
How it works
1. Add the photo or signature
Click the box that says “Drop images here or click to upload”, or drag files onto it. JPG, PNG, WebP and GIF files up to 50MB each are accepted, and you can add several at once, such as a photo and a signature for the same form.
2. Leave the 20KB preset in place
Under Compression Mode, Target Size is selected and the Enter Target Size box already reads 20 with KB highlighted. Keep Output Format on JPG, which is what exam portals expect. Avoid the “Or select a preset:” buttons here: none of them is 20KB, and the smallest, Minimum, is 25KB.
3. Press Compress
The button reads “Compress 1 Image” (the number follows how many files are waiting). Each row then shows the original size, the new size and the percentage saved, so you can confirm the result is under 20KB before you download anything.
4. Download and upload to the form
Click Download Image, or Download All when there are several files. The file keeps its original name with “-compressed.jpg” added, which makes it easy to find when the application portal asks you to browse for it.
When you'd use it
A signature capped at 20KB
Banking and SSC forms commonly allow a signature between 10KB and 20KB. A phone photo of a signature on white paper is usually several megabytes, and a 20KB target brings it under the cap in one pass.
Checking the floor of a photo range
When a portal asks for a 20–50KB photograph, a 20KB file is the smallest it accepts. Use this page to see how your photo looks at the bottom of the range, then choose a target a little higher so rounding cannot push it under.
Scholarship and admission uploads
College admission and scholarship portals often reuse the same small caps for passport-style photos. Compressing to 20KB once and keeping the file saves redoing it for every application in the same season.

Parents filling forms for two or three children can add every photo in one go. Each file gets its own 20KB result and its own download button, and nothing is sent anywhere while it runs.
Why photos get stuck above 20KB
File size depends on two things: how many pixels the image has and how hard each pixel is compressed. A 3000×4000 phone photo has 12 million pixels. Squeezing that into 20,480 bytes leaves about 0.014 bits for each pixel, far below what JPEG needs for a recognisable face. The same budget spread over a 200×230 photo, the size SSC CGL asks for, is about 3.6 bits per pixel, which is plenty.
This compressor first searches for the highest JPEG quality that fits the target while keeping the full resolution. Only when even its lowest quality setting is still too big does it start shrinking the dimensions, at a fixed medium quality. A mid-sized photo can therefore come out at 20KB but visibly blocky, because it was compressed hard at full size instead of being made smaller first.
The fix is to resize before you compress. Crop and scale the photo to the exact pixel size the exam lists with the Resize Image tool, then bring it back here. At 200×230 or 140×60 pixels the 20KB target is easy to meet at a high quality setting, and the portal's dimension check passes too.
Keeping a 20KB photo sharp
Crop tight. Head and shoulders filling the frame means the bytes are spent on the face rather than on a wall or a doorway. A plain, evenly lit background compresses far better than a patterned curtain, because smooth areas cost JPEG almost nothing while fine texture costs a lot.
As a rough guide, JPEG quality settings of about 70 percent and above look clean on a small passport-style photo, and below about 30 percent block edges and colour smearing start to show around eyes and hair. If your result looks worse than that, the image is still too large in pixels for the budget: resize it down and compress again.
For signatures, sign with a dark pen on plain white paper and crop away the empty margins. A signature is mostly white space, so once it is cropped to its bounding box it usually lands well under 20KB with the strokes still crisp.
How the 20KB figure is counted
The compressor treats 1KB as 1,024 bytes, so a 20KB target allows at most 20,480 bytes. A portal that counts in thousands would read that same file as 20.48KB. When a form's upper limit is strict, typing 19 in the target box gives you a safety margin that works under either convention.
Whether the photo fits at full size or has to be scaled down, the search stops once a result lands between 95 and 100 percent of the target, so most photos come out between about 19KB and 20KB. A small or very simple image can finish lower, because even its best quality already fits; the result row flags any file that ends up well under the target.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my 20KB photo blurry or blocky?
The photo still had too many pixels for the budget, so the compressor had to use a very low JPEG quality or shrink the image by itself. Resize it to the exam's pixel size first, then compress to 20KB again.
My form says 20–50KB. Should I target exactly 20KB?
No. 20KB is the minimum in that range, and the result is always at or below its target, so an exact 20KB target can fail the minimum. Target 30KB to 40KB instead, or use the 50KB page for a result near the top of the range.
Can a 20KB file still be rejected?
Yes, for reasons other than size. Portals also check pixel dimensions, the JPG format and sometimes the background colour. The form checker on this site compares a file against an exam's full specification before you upload.
Does compressing to 20KB remove the photo's EXIF data?
Yes. The image is redrawn on a canvas and re-encoded, and that output carries no camera, date or location metadata. Only the pixels are kept.
Is 20KB small enough for a signature upload?
For the common 10–20KB signature range it is the largest size accepted. A cropped signature often compresses well below 20KB; if it falls under 10KB, raise it with the Increase Image Size in KB tool.
Can I compress a PNG signature to 20KB?
Yes. Leave Output Format on JPG and the transparent parts are filled with white before encoding. Choosing PNG output is lossless, so the tool could only meet 20KB by shrinking the dimensions.
