WebP is Google modern image format designed for efficient web delivery. Converting photographic JPEGs to WebP reduces bandwidth consumption and accelerates page loading times for mobile visitors. Because WebP uses predictive block coding, it achieves comparable sharpness to JPEG at significantly lower byte weights.

TryDocsy converts your JPG files entirely on your device using client-side canvas rendering. No picture bytes ever travel to external servers, protecting your personal photo albums, identity cards, and receipts. If you have images in other formats such as BMP, HEIC, or TIFF, use our Universal Image Converter, or convert WebP images back using our WEBP to JPG tool.

How it works

  1. 1. Select JPG photos

Drag your JPG or JPEG images into the drop area or click the upload box to pick files up to 20 MB each.

  2. 2. Set compression quality

Adjust the quality slider to control output size. A setting of 85% to 90% delivers sharp photographic detail while keeping file sizes small.

  3. 3. Convert and save WebP files

Click the convert button to process your images. Download converted WebP files individually or as a single ZIP file.

When you'd use it

  • Optimizing website imagery for Core Web Vitals

Google search ranking penalizes slow page load times. Converting hero banners and product photos from JPG to WebP improves Largest Contentful Paint scores.

  • Reducing mobile app asset bundles

Mobile software developers convert bundled JPEG wallpapers and onboarding illustrations to WebP to keep initial download sizes under cellular network limits.

  • Publishing high-resolution portfolio galleries

Photographers and graphic designers need crisp image displays without consuming gigabytes of monthly web hosting bandwidth. WebP provides compact photo storage.

  • Preparing email newsletter graphics

Modern desktop and mobile email clients support WebP. Converting JPEG newsletter headers reduces message size, preventing inbox clipping.

How does WebP compress photos more efficiently than JPEG?

JPEG compresses images using Discrete Cosine Transform across fixed 8x8 pixel blocks. In contrast, WebP employs predictive coding adapted from the VP8 video compression codec. It analyzes surrounding pixel blocks to predict values in subsequent blocks, encoding only the difference between prediction and reality.

Our own test used a synthetic 1920 x 1080 JPEG of 777,738 bytes. At 90% quality it became 104,846 bytes, 87% smaller, but that file compresses unusually well, so expect less from a real photo. The tool shows the real size of each file. If you need even smaller outputs for strict upload forms, use our compress image tool to target fixed kilobyte limits.

What happens to EXIF camera metadata during conversion?

Standard JPEG photos captured on smartphones and digital cameras include EXIF metadata tags. These tags record sensitive information including GPS coordinates, camera models, shutter speeds, and timestamps.

Because TryDocsy processes images by drawing pixels onto an HTML5 canvas element, the browser encoder extracts pure pixel color values and generates a fresh WebP container. Original EXIF metadata is stripped automatically. This protects your personal location privacy and strips unnecessary kilobyte overhead before web publishing.

If you need a lossless format that supports full transparency for logos and cutouts, try our JPG to PNG tool instead.

Why renaming .jpg to .webp in file explorer will not work

Changing a file extension from photo.jpg to photo.webp does not change the internal encoding. The file still contains JPEG markers (0xFFD8FF) rather than the required RIFF WebP header.

Web browsers and strict upload portals inspect the binary signature of uploaded assets. A renamed file will be rejected as corrupt or invalid. Our browser tool reconstructs the true byte stream, producing genuine WebP files that begin with RIFF and WEBP signatures.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert multiple JPG files at once?

Yes. Select or drop multiple JPG photos into the upload box. The converter processes the entire queue locally and lets you download a ZIP archive containing all files.

Does converting JPG to WebP add transparency?

No. Standard JPG images are fully opaque without an alpha channel. Converting an opaque JPG to WebP produces an opaque WebP file.

What is the maximum JPG file size allowed?

The tool accepts individual image files up to 20 MB each. All decoding and re-encoding runs in your local browser memory.

What is the maximum resolution for WebP images?

The WebP format specification defines a maximum dimension limit of 16,383 by 16,383 pixels per side. Images exceeding this dimension cannot be encoded to WebP.

Are my photos uploaded to any server?

No. All conversion operations take place entirely in your web browser. No image data is transmitted across the internet.

Does this converter work on mobile phones?

It runs in the browser with no install or account, but we have only tested it in Edge on Windows. Some browsers can display WebP without being able to create it. If yours can't, the tool says so before you convert.
