Change Background isolates subjects from portraits or product images and replaces original scenery with solid colors, smooth gradients, or clean transparency. The tool runs an IS-Net segmentation neural network directly within your web browser using WebAssembly. The approximately 40 MB model downloads on first use and stays cached in local browser storage, so subsequent edits start without redownloading.

Photos larger than 2048 pixels on either edge are automatically scaled down before segmentation to preserve memory. How does client-side AI background segmentation work?
TryDocsy uses the @imgly/background-removal library powered by the IS-Net (Interference-aware Segmentation Network) ONNX model, running locally through onnxruntime-web. Unlike cloud-based background removers that upload your private photos to remote computing clusters, the entire inference process runs locally on your device's CPU or WebAssembly engine. Your private photos never leave your device.
To prevent memory crashes on mobile browsers and maintain interactive performance, the client enforces a maximum dimension threshold of 2048 pixels. Photos wider or taller than 2048 pixels are scaled proportionally onto a canvas prior to segmentation. The neural network generates a high-resolution alpha mask that separates the subject, after which the canvas composites the foreground over your chosen solid color, gradient, or transparent canvas.

For instance, Indian recruitment boards like SSC and UPSC frequently mandate smooth white or light backgrounds without shadows. United States and Schengen visa guidelines explicitly demand plain white or off-white studio backdrops.
