Change Background Color is a free AI-powered tool that removes backgrounds from any image and replaces them with a solid color, gradient, or transparent backdrop. Create product photos, profile pictures, or creative designs with professional results.

This tool runs an AI segmentation model directly in your browser — an approximately 40 MB model downloads on first use and is cached afterward, so later edits start instantly — to separate your photo's subject from its background, then lets you replace that background with a solid colour, a gradient, or leave it transparent. Everything runs client-side using WebAssembly; your photo is never uploaded anywhere to be processed.
There's no dedicated “ID photo” or “exam photo” preset built in — if a form needs an exact background colour, you set it yourself using the colour picker or the preset swatches, which include plain white and black but no ready-made “official blue.” Very large photos are also automatically downscaled before the AI runs, and results are only as clean as any background-removal model gets around fine detail like hair or glasses — both covered below.
How it works
1. Upload one image
Drag a photo onto the upload area or click to browse. Only one file at a time is accepted, and files over 20 MB are rejected here.
2. Press Remove Background
The status line above the upload area shows whether the AI model is still downloading, warming up, or ready; processing can start as soon as you upload even while the model finishes downloading in the background.
3. Pick a new background
Choose Transparent, Solid or Gradient from the Background panel. Solid offers 12 preset swatches plus a colour picker for an exact hex value; Gradient offers 6 named presets, two custom colour pickers, and four direction buttons.
4. Set the output format and size
Once removal finishes, pick PNG, JPG or WEBP under Output Format, optionally type a custom Width/Height (with an aspect-ratio lock toggle), then press “Download [FORMAT].”
When you'd use it
A plain-coloured background for an ID or exam photo upload
Type the exact hex code a portal specifies (or use the white swatch for a plain white background) rather than guessing from the preset colours, since there's no built-in ID-photo preset that guarantees a match.

Removing a cluttered or shadowed background and replacing it with a flat white or light solid colour gives a more consistent look across a set of product images without needing a lightbox or studio setup.

Getting an exact background colour for official forms
The 12 preset swatches cover common choices — white, black, and ten colours — but a form that specifies a precise shade (a particular light blue for a government exam, for instance) is unlikely to have an exact preset match. The colour picker next to the swatches accepts any hex value directly, so if you know the required colour code, type it there rather than eyeballing the closest preset swatch.
Where AI background removal holds up, and where it struggles
Photos larger than 2048 pixels on either side are automatically scaled down before the AI model processes them, which keeps the on-device removal fast but means a very high-resolution photo's edges are worked out from a somewhat lower-resolution version than the original. Like any AI segmentation model, the hardest cases are fine, semi-transparent or wispy detail — flyaway hair, glasses frames, lace — where a slight fringe or rough edge is more likely; a subject with a clear outline against a plain or evenly lit background tends to cut out the most cleanly.
Keeping (or deliberately losing) transparency in the download
If you choose Transparent as the background type, download as PNG or WEBP to actually keep the transparent areas transparent — both formats support an alpha channel. Choosing JPG instead always fills any transparent area with white before saving, because JPEG has no way to store transparency, so a Transparent choice paired with a JPG download will come out as a plain white background rather than a see-through one.
Frequently asked questions
Can I set an exact colour, like a specific light blue for an exam form?
Yes — use the colour picker next to the solid-colour swatches and type or pick the exact hex value. The 12 preset swatches are quick options but won't necessarily match a portal's exact required shade.
Will a very high-resolution photo lose detail during background removal?
Photos wider or taller than 2048 pixels are automatically downscaled before the AI model runs, so the edge detection works from that smaller version. Photos at or under 2048px on both sides are processed at their original size.
Why did my transparent background turn white after downloading?
JPG can't store transparency, so downloading as JPG always fills transparent areas with white regardless of which background type you picked. Choose PNG or WEBP to keep the transparent areas actually transparent.
Do I need to wait for the AI model to download every time I use the tool?
No. The roughly 40 MB model downloads once and is cached in your browser, so background removal on later uploads — in the same browser — starts immediately instead of waiting for another download.
Is my photo uploaded to a server for the AI to process it?
No. The background-removal model runs inside your browser tab using WebAssembly; the image itself is never sent anywhere to be analysed.
